Classic Christmas comedy, Army Colonel casting hope for US troops

Author Sylvia Hysen, Casting Hope Founder Pixie Monroe, and US Army Colonel Special Forces and Accessions Brigade Commander, John Fenzel, III collaborate to send autographed cases of Hysen’s classic Christmas comedy, A Very Dairy Christmas, to US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Burbank, CA (PRWEB) December 15, 2008-- When author Sylvia Hysen sought direction in shipping cases of her classic Christmas comedy, A Very Dairy Christmas to US troops overseas, she didn’t have to look too far. She merely phoned a friend Pixie Monroe, Hollywood Casting Director and Founder of Casting Hope, who in turn phoned a friend, US Army Colonel Special Forces and Accessions Brigade Commander, John Fenzel, III. “I wanted to show my appreciation to our troops, so I reached out to Pixie for help,” Hysen explains. “She [Monroe] is promoting the Yellow Ribbon Express, a traveling locomotive exhibition in honor of our wounded military soldiers scheduled to roll out on September 11, 2011, so I figured she would be the most logical person to call.” Monroe currently produces Casting Hope, a bi-monthly philanthropic web cast with former KIIS FM/KBIG radio personality, Gary Spears that connects celebrity endorsed charities to a nationwide audience.

What Hysen didn’t expect was a personal response from a high ranking military official. “When Pixie said she’d get right back to me, she certainly made good on her word. I had addresses for US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan almost immediately,” Hysen reports. “And I was speaking directly to the Colonel shortly thereafter.” Fenzel is a US Army Colonel Special Forces and Accessions Brigade Commander at Ft. Knox, KY who seizes every opportunity to show respect and concern for those serving our nation. “While Christmas has always been a season of peace for our country, the men and women of our military have spent innumerable Christmases serving their country abroad so that future generations could live in peace,” Col. Fenzel states. “Indeed, remembering our troops at Christmas is perhaps the only true measure of appreciation we can offer our brave men and women—living and dead—who have selflessly provided us the greatest gift of all: the gift of freedom.”

Hysen was determined to send Christmas cheer to US troops serving overseas, so she ordered cases of her classic Christmas comedy, A Very Dairy Christmas, from her publisher, autographed each copy with a message of gratitude, wrapped the books with special cow wrapping paper and red bows, and added packets of hot cocoa and candy canes as décor. She repacked them in red straw and added a Christmas card. “It isn’t much,” she insists, “but it’s what I have to give. And if every American Author did the same thing, our US troops would be flooded with warm sentiments and lasting impressions from the literary world.” When asked if that was an official challenge to fellow writers, Hysen responded, “Affirmative.”

A Very Dairy Christmas is a story about dysfunctional family life that follows the exploits of a spoiled New York debutante who is forced to spend her Christmas vacation on a Wisconsin dairy farm with her estranged, German immigrant grandparents. Hysen uses witty dialogue, familiar character types, and pop-culture to drive her message of social tolerance, generational differences and selfless giving. “My gift to the troops is laughter…” Hysen declares, “I think we could all use a little more of that in our lives right about now.”

Christmas Family Saga Inspires Home Economics Curriculum

A Very Dairy Christmas, a classic comedy by author Sylvia Hysen, provides literary foundation for 4 National Standards approved Home Economics activities in Fresh FACS Publishing’s A Novel Approach to Family and Consumer Science.

Burbank, CA (PRWEB) November 24, 2008-- If you had asked author, Sylvia Hysen, what her greatest professional achievement had been after penning her family saga, A Very Dairy Christmas, she might have said having the screenplay version of her story in film development. But even that paled in comparison to being notified that her classic Christmas comedy about dysfunctional family life had been chosen for inclusion in Fresh FACS Publishing's A Novel Approach to Family and Consumer Science, an avant-garde life science curriculum that uses contemporary literature to teach practical skills to teenagers. "It was always my intention to blend history and timely facts into the story line while bedazzling readers with humor, larger than life characters, and relatable situations, but I wasn't prepared for the National Standards approved academic discipline that Fresh FACS Publishing authored," admits Hysen. "Writing for entertainment is one thing. Writing for the classroom and students that are home schooled is quite another."

A Very Dairy Christmas is a contemporary comedy about dysfunctional family relationships that centers on the privileged and often controversial world of 15 year old Callie Michaels when she’s forced to spend her Christmas vacation with her estranged German grandparents on their Wisconsin dairy farm. Written for young adults but aimed at bridging generational differences, Hysen’s novel uses humor, emotion, and a heavy dose of corporate branding to deliver endearing characters, thought provoking sentiment, and snippets of history, science, commerce, and technology. “I believe a book can be both entertaining and informative at the same time,” Hysen insists. “You just have to find the right balance. And when you do, it’s magic.”

A Novel Approach to Family and Consumer Science by Ramona Hatch blends the story line and main characters of Hysen's A Very Dairy Christmas with creative, hands-on culinary, nutrition, and fashion assignments that emphasize the diverse skill sets found in three generations of strong women. Among Hatch's activities is a chemistry experiment resulting in a Mock Apple pie that mirrors the frustrating experience Callie endures when she attempts to bake a pie from scratch, and a crocheting project that produces a replica of the hat and scarf set presented to Callie by her terminally ill girlfriend, Amanda. "The hat and scarf are symbolic and serve as a catalyst in a young woman’s transformation," Hysen says. "Ramona [Hatch] took a descriptive passage and made it tangible by applying physical design. She may have just single-handedly resurrected crocheting as a popular art form."

Young women find Callie’s character and attitude especially appealing. She’s tenacious, intelligent, and a true trendsetter in fashion and beauty. Her propensity for nutrition is uncanny for a fifteen year old, and her ingenuity is a threat to most men. But even diamonds have flaws, and Callie is no different. She learns the hard way that value can be found in all walks of life, and that human kindness is inherent and not just something to be charged on a credit card. "As a former high school teacher, I found Callie to be a delightful character," Hatch declares. "Her evolution into a caring and compassionate person serves as an object lesson for young readers...and her [Callie's] exploits developed into great classroom learning activities."
